In statements to the newspaper le ‘quipe, the Algerian star stressed that he was very happy to move to Al-Raqi Castle and has no regrets about this decision.
Mahrez joined Al Ahly in the summer of this year, coming from the first team football team of English club Manchester City.
Riyad Mahrez was considered entitled to the award of the best player in Africa, more than the Moroccan Yassin Bono, goalkeeper of the Saudi Al-hilal Club, who is nominated by many for that.
Al-Ahli stressed that Bono’s achievements, by reaching the semi-finals of the 2022 World Cup with Morocco, and being crowned the Europa League title with Sevilla in Spain, are not compared to his personal achievement last season, by securing the historic treble with Manchester City.
In conclusion, Mahrez denied the accusations that he was playing selfishly; Saying, “All it is, I’m doing more evasions than normal, that’s a talent.”
Mahrez had left the Premier League champions in the past summer transfer season, joining the Saudi Jeddah community for £30m.
“I had two years in my contract with Manchester City, and I could stay, I decided to leave,” Mahrez said in remarks to French newspaper L’Equipe.
“I felt that this opportunity (to join my parents) would not be repeated again, maybe it was time to leave because I spent five years in Manchester City and won everything.”
“To be honest, I still have a taste of unfinished business, in the Champions League, I didn’t play semi-finals or final, in previous seasons, I was always in the Champions League, and I was always influential in my team,” he admitted.
