Who is Luis Castro, the coach of Al-Nassr:

Luís Castro is a Portuguese football coach who was appointed as the head coach of the Saudi Arabian football club Al-Nassr for the 2023-2024 season. Prior to his role as a coach at Al-Nassr, Castro had a long career in the world of football as both a player and a coach.

Luís Castro was born on September 3, 1961, in the village of Mondrões in Vila Real, Portugal. He began his football career as a player in 1976, primarily playing as a right-back. Early in his football career, he suffered from a serious illness known as "erythromelalgia," or inflammation of the blood vessels, which forced him to step away from football for three years.

After recovering from his illness, Castro played for several Portuguese clubs, including Vitoria Guimaraes and Anadia Lusitano, before retiring from playing in 1997.

Castro started his coaching career in 1998, working with several smaller clubs before joining FC Porto in Portugal in 2013. At Porto, he coached youth teams and also served as an interim coach for the first team following the resignation of coach Paulo Fonseca.

Following his time at Porto, Castro went on to coach various clubs in Portugal before embarking on his coaching journey abroad. He coached Shakhtar Donetsk in Ukraine, Al-Duhail in Qatar, and finally Botafogo in Brazil.

During his coaching career, Castro achieved success by winning several championships. He won the Portuguese second division with Porto's B team in the 2015-2016 season and secured the Ukrainian Premier League title with Shakhtar Donetsk in the 2019-2020 season. He also led Al-Duhail to victory in the Qatar Emir Cup in the 2021-2022 season and won the "Taça Rio" championship with Botafogo in 2023, which is an annual competition in Rio de Janeiro.

Luís Castro signed a contract with Al-Nassr's first-team that ties him to the club for two seasons until June 30, 2025. His appointment at Al-Nassr received full support from the Portuguese football legend Cristiano Ronaldo, who plays for the club.
