The Asian Football Federation (AFC) ended a crisis in Saudi clubs at the level of participation in continental leagues, regarding the participation of foreign players.

The AFC allowed all clubs to have access to an open number of foreign players, without adhering to the previous regulation, which provided for the participation of only 5 foreign players per team, including at least one from within the continent.

According to the new amendments, clubs have the right to use any number of players in the Asian elite competition, which is launching its new version this year, according to the Saudi newspaper Al-Maidan Sports.

The Saudi Football Federation had enabled clubs to register 10 players for the maximum start of the new season, while Crescent, Alahi and Nasr clubs would benefit from the new adjustment made by the Asian Champions League for the elite, comprising the top 24 teams (the highest ranked) on the continent, and the Asian Champions League (2) with 32 teams competing in the second tier.

The Third Level Championship is called the Asian Challenge Cup and includes 20 teams, with Saudi clubs not participating.

Al-Hilal’s participation in the Asian Champions League was confirmed for the elite, leading the Saudi Professional League ranking table by 80 points.

Al-Nasr will participate in the same (elite) tournament after finishing the current season in second place, which he currently occupies by 71 points.

The third-placed AFC Champions League tournament also participates in Asian competitions, including the AFC Champions League 2, in which the team participates.
In September, the governing body of the Saudi Football Association adopted the mechanism for clubs’ participation in continental leagues in the 2024-2025 season.
